62. What policy would most effectively encourage people to use electric cars?

Professor’s Prompt:
To reduce reliance on fossil fuels, what kind of government policy would best promote electric vehicle use? Explain your recommendation.

Student A
Governments should subsidize the installation of charging stations, especially in public places like shopping centers.
It’s hard for apartment residents to charge vehicles at home, so public access is key.

Student B
Creating dedicated highway lanes for electric cars would encourage adoption.
Commuters would benefit from faster travel, giving them a strong incentive to make the switch.

Instead of adopting the traditional measure of funding the manufacture and use of such vehicles, we should try something different to promote electric cars: establishing special lanes and roads exclusively for electric cars.

The advantages of such practice are very different from those of funding.
As Kelly argues, funding electric automobiles makes it possible to charge one’s car in one’s neighborhood or when they park cars in shopping center. This parallels practicality and convenience, drawing potential buyers with immediate benefits.
Nonetheless, she overlooks the facts that the costs of manufacturing and maintaining electric cars still remain high while a lot of cars being charging in the neighborhood intensively can exert pressure on local electricity supply and even pose a threat to people’ safety.

Instead of funding the installation of charging stations, we should try a different approach to promote electric cars: establishing special lanes and roads exclusively for electric cars.

1. Instead of + V-ing 表示「不是做A,而是做B」。
2. 主句核心為 we should try a different approach,冒號後用動名詞片語具體說明「另一種方式」。

Instead of raising fuel taxes, governments should try a different approach to reduce emissions: investing heavily in renewable energy infrastructure.

Nonetheless, she overlooks the facts that the costs of manufacturing and maintaining electric cars still remain high while a lot of cars being charged in the neighborhood intensively can exert pressure on local electricity supply and even pose a threat to people’s safety.

1. she overlooks the facts that…while…
2. 後半句 a lot of cars being charged…can exert pressure…
3. 句尾並列 exert pressure… and pose a threat…,形成「雙重後果」結構。

Nonetheless, policymakers overlook the facts that artificial intelligence can reinforce social inequalities while excessive reliance on algorithms may undermine human judgment and democratic deliberation.
