Now although there are many monuments throughout my country, I want to particularly zoom in on a chastity monument, the Huang’s Chastity Memorial Arch, which is located within the 228 Memorial Park in Taipei. I have to mention, though, that this monument is not very well known. For one thing, it is standing at a corner of the park so it’s not very obvious. For another, what the monument celebrates is a virtue that may not be universally appreciated by today’s culture or standards. Having said that, I still believe its presence carries much value. For starters, it has architectural value. The chastity monument is put high on pillars to suggest the rarity of the chaste woman. For another, even though it looks like a very common square and gray monument, it is made of granite, which makes perfect sense because this material lasts, resonating with the quality of chastity. In general, I like this monument a lot not just because of its historical and architectural importance; it has won my respect because it reminds that there was, has been, and there will always be someone who sticks to principle, moral, and good tradition.
