The strawberry poison dart frog provides one striking example. After her eggs hatch, the female carries each tadpole separately to a tiny pool of rainwater collected inside a plant. Such pools contain few predators, but they also contain little food. The mother therefore returns and deposits unfertilized eggs, which the tadpoles eat. Because this care requires considerable energy, she usually raises only a small number of young at one time.
